What is it?:

  • Dance Club is a Jazz/Funk/Hip Hop-inspired dance class, where beats meet feet in a celebration of joy and self-expression.  Each week we learn funky footwork, and soulful moves that’ll have you dancing with confidence and style. And you’ll get to repeat some of the same songs week so you can perfect the grooves. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or just looking to unleash your inner funk, our inclusive and welcoming atmosphere ensures everyone can shine. Get ready for a dance experience that ignites creativity, and leaves you smiling from ear to ear!
  • It is meant to include all levels of “movers” but may  be best for those who have taken some form of dance class in the past.  Moves can be modified to meet your fitness and skill level.
  • You will be learning new choreography each week to songs that are approximately 3 minutes (with lots of repetitive choreography that makes moves easier to grasp) as well as dancing to the same songs each week that you have learned in weeks prior. This gives you an opportunity to improve moves and hone skills. Approximately 2/3 of the choreography is by Medora French Cesarano, with some choreography as well as modifications and revisions by Mary Purdy. 1/3 of the choreo is by Mary Purdy.  Some dance fundamentals will always be taught at the beginning of class.
  • Class is limited to 15 people  
  • For ages 16+ and up.  There may be some more “explicit” lyrics in songs and some body-positive sensual movement that may not feel appropriate for all ages.

Where is it?:

MONDAYS:  At Cherry Street Movement Studio (Ling Hui’s Dance): 909 L ST, Port Townsend WA 98368   ENTER on L street. Cross street = Cherry Street.  Close to Fort Worden Park.  (Parking available in front of the house or on Cherry Street)

  • Entrance is ON L STREET.  It is the first house on your left as you turn onto L street which curves around.  The studio is BELOW the house.

WEDNESDAYS: At Port Townsend Athletic Club!  229 Monroe St

When is it?:

Mondays: 7:30pm-8:30pm.  Please arrive no later than 7:25 to find parking and pay.  You are welcome to arrive at 7:20pm to begin warming up on your own.

Wednesdays: 5-6pm

How much is it?

  • MONDAYS AT LING HUI’S STUDIO
    • First class is free!
    • $10/class (Please let me know if this is a hardship for you.  I am happy to make it $5 for those struggling financially.)
    • You can pay via Venmo  (@MarySPurdy) or bring check (Made out to “Mary Purdy”) or cash to class.  (Pre-paying secures a spot in the class)
    • Bring a friend and get in for $5
  • WEDNESDAYS AT PT ATHLETIC CLUB
    • First class is free!
    • $5 or free with membership

What should I wear?

  • Clothes that are comfortable to move in, including doing some stretching/warming up/cooling down
  • IMPORTANT:  At Ling Hui’s Studio: Indoor shoes/sneakers only.  This is in order to protect the floors of the dance studio where the classes will be held. This may just mean you throw a pair of sneakers into the washing machine and make those your dedicated “Dance Club” shoes.

What else do I need to know?  

  • We will be warming up for 5 minutes at the start of class, but it’s great if you come to class having moved your body prior so your muscles are warm and you don’t risk injury.  Be sure to focus on ankles, knees an shoulders!  Here is a 5 minute dance warm up video on youtube.  (No endorsement from me for any ads you might see)
  • The goal of this class is to create community in dance that celebrates movement, body and our spirits.  We leave ego at the door and engage in joyful dance moves and support of our fellow classmates.
  • The class is a safe space meant to be inclusive, body positive and anti-racist.  Any language or behavior that is disrespectful will not be tolerated.  I’m sure this won’t be a problem, but I am putting it here just as a reminder.

I am an Eco-Dietitian, Educator and Nutrition and Sustainability Advisor who is bringing my passion for jazzy/funky/hip-hop-esque dancing to Port Townsend, WA. I have  been embracing “Dance Club” moves for close to a decade and have studied dance at Westlake Dance Center and Exit Space Dance Studio in Seattle, and studied privately with Jason Umbao. My first career was in the theater which included performances in shows like Cabaret, Little Shop of Horrors.  I don’t pretend to be any kind of advanced professional dancer but I do love dancing and dancing with others.  I bring a high energy, but low key, low pressure and supportive vibe to my classes where everyone, (including me!), is invited to be themselves and shake it like they mean it.
